Dear Parents and Carers,
As you may know, our school has been working hard over the last few years to become more environmentally friendly. This change has been led by our Eco Committee, Mrs Ingleby and Mrs Beard, but each and every member of St. Charles has also played a big part.
Our next big project is to try and reduce the amount of plastic in our packed lunches and break time snacks, and this is something that we need your help with!
Did you know that a child with a disposable lunch will generate 30kg of waste a year? Now, imagine this multiplied by 90 children, that’s a lot of waste!
We carried out a survey of just 9 children’s packed lunches, and this is what we found…
Most items we bring for our lunch involve some sort of disposable plastic. As you can see, there were only 8 items that were reusable or involved no waste, that’s not even 1 item per child.
We have been discussing ways we can minimize the plastic we use in our lunches and some of our KS2 children have produced leaflets to give you some swap suggestions. For example, instead of 5 packets of crisps over the week, you could buy one big bag and put a handful into a reusable container.
Over the coming months, we are going to be working in school to promote plastic free lunches and we would love it if you were able to support us in any way you can. Even if every family made one small change (such as swapping juice cartons to reusable sports bottles) we could make a big difference to our world.
Thank you for taking the time to read over our plans, and we hope you find our ‘Swap Suggestions’ leaflet useful.
